As a preventative maintenance item, I was looking at removing the original Yanmar solenoids (mounted down low and adjacent to the starter) as I had heard that when they fail it is always at the worst time and they are hard to get at.
I had to remove the alternator and use several sources of lighting from different angles and a small mirror to see where they are mounted. Using a 10mm socket and wrench, I was able to remove them. It was a good thing I did as both engines had rusted solenoids with the connection terminals being extremely corroded. I took one apart and the internal contact points were also corroded so I think I caught them in time!
While I could have used a small low current solid state relay, I used a tried and true Cole Hersee solenoid and mounted it to the inside of the hull in a high and dry location close to the engine. Since the solenoid is not attached to the engine, you have to provide a ground wire to the engine block but other than that it was "relatively" easy.
