One of the options for window shades are the pleated blinds sold at Home Depot or wherever. They give the sun protection when needed but disappear under the cornace board when u wish.

We chose outside window coverings that snap on, but do allow some light to enter. The PDQ dealer Trawlers Midwest had them made for us. Very nice clean look.
